"The Eternaut" draws from Héctor Germán Oesterheld’s celebrated Argentine comic book, El Eternauta. This Netflix production, mirroring the source material, centers around an alien invasion that brings about the end of the world in Buenos Aires, Argentina. But does it succeed? For the most part, yes. The narrative sticks closely to the comic's plot, though there are a few unresolved elements that can be somewhat disappointing. The characters are well-developed and the actors deliver strong performances. There’s a genuine sense of humanity and realism among the central survivors, which stands out against the often exaggerated portrayals common in post-apocalyptic stories. The environment is also very effective; toxic snow produced by the invaders necessitates protective gear to survive, generating an atmosphere of abrupt disorder, restriction, and loneliness. It’s a strange world that feels both recognizable and unsettlingly foreign. Ultimately, this is a series better than average and generally a faithful rendition of Oesterheld's original story. It's certainly worth checking out.
