It’s hard to understand why another version of The Day of the Jackal was made. I know of two films based on Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel, and they were both fairly good. The television series isn't bad, though. Eddie Redmayne does a great job playing the Jackal. However, I don’t feel quite as positive about Lashana Lynch’s portrayal of Bianca Pullman; she seems somewhat adrift, if that makes sense. Some people might disagree with me on this. I think Idris Elba would have been an ideal casting choice. Never mind... The series is acceptable overall and contains the expected elements of a spy thriller. Those who've read the book—like myself—and seen the films from 1973 and 1997 (which was a fairly free adaptation) won’t find anything particularly fresh here. On the other hand, people who are unfamiliar with the story might find this to be an enjoyable and generally agreeable experience. Basically, it's a reasonably good series that doesn’t bring much new to the table but could appeal to those wanting to see it again or to viewers completely new to the material. It's worth checking out.
