Hitchcock’s approach often involved a sort of amiable competition with advertisers, and it seems likely that this alone was beneficial to them through increased visibility. It’s difficult to assign a numerical rating to an anthology series, but the majority of these segments were quite strong. The most memorable ones featured characters who weren't necessarily easy to identify with, yet still evoked some kind of emotional response. This held true for what I consider his finest work, “A Piece of the Action,” starring Gig Young and Robert Redford as brothers consumed by an inflated sense of importance, as well as "Final Escape," featuring Robert Keith, Ed Byrnes, and Stephen McNally, and "The Jar," which included Mr. Haney himself. There were also some comedic installments. One particularly memorable one deliberately made it obvious that a “dining club” was consuming its members as they gained weight. The humor came from the obliviousness of the individual about to become dinner, despite all the clear signs pointing toward that outcome. Few episodes presented characters with whom viewers could easily connect, which turned out to be a positive thing because many were excessively arrogant, self-centered, or cruel; therefore, it wasn't troubling when they met unfortunate ends like being buried alive or eliminated by gangsters who disapproved of card players’ dishonesty.
