In the Roman world, it was commonplace to regard the emperor as a divine figure. Successive emperors often embraced this status, believing that upon the death of their predecessor, the departed ruler would ascend to the heavens and join the gods, thereby establishing their own reign as “the son of a god.” This raises a profound question: how do these narratives of ascension compare with the story of Jesus, who was crucified, resurrected, and then ascended to heaven to sit at God’s right hand?
