Life’s a hilarious game of one-upmanship for eighth grader Nishikata, and he's perpetually stuck playing catch-up with the ever-elusive Takagi. Year two finds him still determined to finally crack her playful teasing and level the score, but his attempts continue to backfire in wonderfully awkward and endearing ways.

The usual order of things dissolved when Takagi challenged Nishikata to an arm-wrestling match after class. It wasn’t the first time, but this time, things didn’t unfold as expected.
He was on his way to purchase a cake – the reason for which was entirely his own business – when he encountered Takagi.
Hungry, they went to the snack shop, and ended up purchasing more than intended. Just then, a classmate appeared.
The murmur of the crowd faded as Nishikata absorbed the old saying: holding hands at the close of a folk dance meant affection returned.
The door wouldn’t budge. Nishikata feigned a struggle, a theatrical push and pull, only to discover, with a growing sense of unease, that they were truly trapped.
