Sometimes I think back to The Twilight Zone and realize that Captain Kirk had some real acting ability, beyond just playing characters. This is T. J. Hooker; it’s Shatner portraying Captain Kirk in an earthbound setting during the eighties. If you settle in expecting the man who portrays someone fearful of flying or fixated on a fortune-telling device, you'll be disappointed. It isn't that Shatner; this is Shatner acting as Kirk, but as a police officer in the eighties. However, it’s not awful either—it functions well in a deliberately exaggerated and cartoonish style, which seems to have been the intention all along. The show aimed for a balance of seriousness and humor. If you're around my age, Hooker feels like Sledge Hammer! (1986) if nobody had realized that Sledge Hammer! was supposed to be funny. And it delivers on entertainment value.
