What really holds this series back isn't the plots themselves; those smaller arcs are reasonably well-constructed and do manage to tie into the larger narrative eventually. The truly unacceptable aspect is the characters – their hairstyles are absurd, the conversations they have are unbelievably silly, their choices consistently bad, and the "modern" special effects are just plain distracting for anyone familiar with even a couple of mainstream science fiction films. We're talking about pointless CGI close-ups, a space vehicle race involving dodging asteroids, and a complete lack of consideration for things like thermodynamics, gravity, biology, basic logic, or common sense. It’s essentially visually appealing imagery coming directly from the computer of someone who is clearly being paid too much but has no creativity, and seems to be deliberately mocking the audience's intelligence. And it's worth noting the captain's unusual habit of always having a ship full of women when he first enters the bridge. That doesn’t mean the show is salvageable though; the weak writing alone is enough to condemn it.
