I recently watched Star Trek: Prodigy and had a good time with it. It’s important to acknowledge that this is aimed at a younger audience, which I feel complicates assessing it fairly. Even though I believe my sense of wonder hasn't completely disappeared. Initially, Star Trek: Prodigy reminded me somewhat of Star Wars. It really took thirteen episodes before I started feeling like I was experiencing something genuinely Star Trek-like. There are some problems with the internal consistency that bothered me. Things like characters recalling prior holodeck sessions or a starship doing things that wouldn’t be possible in space were distracting. However, the show does have engaging and vibrant personalities that kept me interested and wanting to see what happened next. It was also pleasant to see both a holographic and live version of Janeway. Ultimately, this isn't truly Star Trek, nor is it particularly innovative. The characters, familiar plot devices, and unexpected turns—they’ve all been done before. But as someone who enjoys science fiction and Star Trek, I can still appreciate it as pleasant background entertainment. It’s not more or less than that.
