My experience with the initial season of Star Trek Discovery was simply terrible. It felt emptied of the positive feelings—the hope and optimism—that were hallmarks of the excellent series from the nineteen nineties. It was a welcome development that those in charge took fan feedback to heart and produced a noticeably better second season. However, the lingering effects of the first season are still present, and its rigid, overly militaristic atmosphere hasn’t entirely gone away. Complicating matters is the existence of "The Orville," which is genuinely fantastic, and which many devoted fans—myself among them—consider to be the real continuation of the classic Star Trek shows. The show's cheerful tone, well-placed humor, sense of optimism, and intelligent storytelling make it hard to stop watching. Ultimately, this isn’t a complete failure for Trekkies, but it has a considerable distance to travel before it can truly make up for its shortcomings. I give it a 5/10.
