This is a reasonably engaging and more mature reimagining of the well-known space adventure anime from Japan. The initial television program appeared to be primarily geared towards younger boys, but this version seems intended for an older audience—those past their teenage years—featuring considerable self-examination, some romantic and sexual undertones, and generally a more thoughtful approach to filmmaking that delivers a level of depth and artistry absent in the earlier series from many years ago. As an adult American man, I believe I can confidently say that I’ve been able to appreciate this show without excessive longing for the program I enjoyed as a child. However, I also think it's fair to recognize both TV shows as a form of wish fulfillment for some Japanese young people whose parents or families generally hold conservative views and perspectives rooted in what was once the Empire of Japan. Even with some overt displays of nationalism in the opening episode, the series does attempt to communicate a message of unity between humans and alien adversaries threatening Earth’s existence. It appears that the goal is to recognize the military ethos of traditional Japan while also guiding younger, impressionable minds toward a more logical perspective. The most impressive aspect is undoubtedly the high production quality. The new animation blends computer-generated imagery with classic hand-drawn techniques and superb artwork, giving the original series a fresh, polished appearance that’s quite visually appealing. That said, it remains an animated show centered on a "space battleship," and the upgraded visuals somewhat conflict with the program's believability. Nevertheless, it offers fairly enjoyable entertainment for what it is. If you are an older viewer who recalls the original Japanese release with any affection, then perhaps consider giving this series a try. The Blu-ray discs include English subtitles for viewers outside of Japan.
