This South Korean thriller, Squid Game (Season 1), is intensely captivating, combining pointed observations about society with scenes of high drama. The narrative centers on 456 individuals in dire circumstances who participate in dangerous versions of childhood games for a large sum of money, which reveals the harsh realities of wealth and the depths of human need. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s insightful writing and direction, along with excellent acting—particularly Lee Jung-jae's portrayal of the complicated Seong Gi-hun—deliver a raw, affecting experience. The striking imagery and memorable music heighten the suspense, even if certain developments in the story seem foreseeable.
