I can’t say that I grasped what the show’s creator intended to communicate. Sonny Boy centers on students who find themselves trapped in a strange, alternate reality where things don’t function as they should. The flow of time is erratic, the established principles are inconsistent, and cats seem to possess qualities reminiscent of Jeff Bezos. The characters vary considerably; some, like Nozomi, prove engaging, while others, such as Nagara, fail to make an impression. A significant issue for me was how time operates within this world—at times, thousands of years pass, yet the characters’ personalities and actions remain unchanged, suggesting they haven't been affected by their experiences. The narrative feels disjointed; there was one episode dedicated to a twelve-minute discussion about invisible monkeys playing baseball, only for those monkeys to be completely forgotten afterward. A conflict arose from duplicates of individuals battling each other, a struggle that has apparently persisted for centuries. One copy eliminates the other, and then it’s simply dropped without further explanation, leaving the characters as if nothing had occurred. The animation quality fluctuates—sometimes appearing polished, at others looking rough, awkward, and low-budget. The audio is generally well done; there isn't an opening theme song, and the ending theme is pleasant. Characters possess abilities, but these aren’t central to the plot. They do generate conflict among them, which works adequately enough, but when that conflict remains unresolved and a concept introduced is abandoned seven episodes later, it feels quite jarring. I'm unsure of my feelings about this series; on one hand, I haven’t encountered anything quite like it, while on the other, much of it went over my head, I found myself dozing off, and I grew annoyed by the absence of a clear direction or purpose. I would suggest watching it only if you're searching for something truly different.
