The central concept is puzzling, really. It’s not among the strongest episodes of The X-Files that I’ve encountered, though perhaps a bit better than some Lost installments. There’s more emphasis on visual presentation than meaningful content, and the actors don't exactly bring much energy to their roles. Perhaps this emptiness is intentional—a portrayal of a soulless corporation trying to crush humanity under its consumerist weight—but once the black goo appeared, I lost most interest. Adam Scott portrays Mark, or Malk, or someone; it’s hard to say. He's been in other projects, you'll probably recognize him even if his career remains obscure, like a puzzle itself. Christopher Walken, John Turturro, and Patricia Arquette are present, providing some star appeal, though their performances aren’t particularly memorable. It seems they’re simply collecting a paycheck, which is understandable. They feel miscast in this production. The show feels as if the creator was very fond of the "Black Goo" storyline from The X-Files and wrote what amounts to an extended fan fiction while bored at a tedious job. He also picked up on the term “liminal” somewhere online and awkwardly inserted it into the narrative. This is noticeable in some deliberately old-fashioned, slightly out-of-place set designs, props, and technology. It’s reminiscent of Wes Anderson's style, but not from his better periods—more like a copycat version of himself. The show needs to conclude after the next season. Of course, it won’t; Apple will likely keep dragging it out as their flagship program. However, that shouldn’t deter anyone from finding alternative ways to view this mess. It's probably only watched through illegal downloads anyway. It's strange how we are actually experiencing a dystopian future and people still choose to watch something like this. If the series were trimmed down to six hour-long episodes, it might be bearable; I’m just hoping for some kind of dramatic incident on set to make things interesting. Awful.
