Samuel on Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles

2/10 · Jul 27, 2021

Having seen many anime series since I began watching them in 2017, I've noticed that it's easy to spot recurring elements and predict where a show might lead. It becomes simple to identify how predictable something will be from quite far out. Most of the time, you can tell immediately just how commonplace a series is going to turn out to be. Even though this one hasn’t yet included guilds or storylines about adventuring (I'm currently on episode 3 and starting episode 4), it seems to follow the familiar plot of someone possessing great power who doesn't want to use it, so they attempt to conceal their abilities. The writers seemed determined to minimize the main character’s achievements whenever he accomplished something. It starts to feel tedious because you can’t really celebrate his successes. And despite others observing his growth for what seems like five years, they still don’t trust him. Their opinions of him never change. Even when he's being mistreated, nobody steps in to help; they simply ignore it. During the fight with that enormous monster where he rescued the young princess, there was no recognition of the fact that he put himself at risk for her. Despite her attempts to get others to acknowledge his good deed, they instead blamed him for something else entirely – implying he felt guilty about making her fall, even though he wasn’t even close to her when it happened. The creators went to great lengths to ensure his victory over the huge monster would go unnoticed; how could anyone fail to hear or lose sight of a creature with that much presence while they were fleeing? They only appear once the battle is finished, because we can't have witnesses seeing the main character defeat something that no one else could handle. Nobody questions why everything suddenly becomes quiet after everyone was just running for their lives... all so the plot can move forward toward the main character being banished and taking responsibility for actions ordered by his superiors. If you’re looking for a standard series where you can anticipate what's going to happen next, then give it a try; based on what I saw in the previews of episode 4, it looks like they will be putting together his group of romantic interests because what is an isekai without one?
