Knowing Sanditon was adapted from an incomplete Jane Austen story, and seeing Anne Reid among the actors, made me want to watch it. It definitely feels like something straight out of Jane Austen’s world: young characters finding romance easily, dealing with the social pressures surrounding marriage, and enjoying dances. There are several manipulative and unpleasant men causing problems throughout the show. If I had to give a rating, I'd say the first season was an 8.0 out of 10, while the second season earned only a 6.0. The second series felt repetitive; it seemed like familiar plot points from Pride and Prejudice were being used again, and one character repeated Marianne’s pattern of pursuing someone unsuitable, though with a different name. It made me wonder if the writers thought, “These are Austen fans, so we can reuse material from some of her other works!” I suppose there will be another season, since they ended Series 2 with one couple not together, and it looks like another potential suitor is already appearing. Let’s see how Season 3 deals with that and whatever else comes up. I'm unsure if I'll even bother watching it, though.
