It's easy to fall into the habit of comparing this show to Groundhog Day, or judging it based on how well it measures up against that film. Before watching, I was doing just that, influenced by what I saw in the advertisements. But I realize now that was a mistake. Groundhog Day is primarily a comedy, intended to be funny above all else. There's an obvious similarity with Russian Doll—both feature a protagonist experiencing the same day repeatedly. However, I felt Russian Doll possessed a greater level of complexity. It wasn’t simply a matter of magic driving the time loop, as it was in Groundhog Day; instead, the characters had to confront a perilous environment seemingly intent on harming them. Nadia isn't immediately likeable, but I appreciated her humor and spirit. If she were male, I suspect any criticism would be less intense. I even caught myself thinking that way until I questioned it. As the series unfolded, though, she evolved, becoming more layered and modifying her actions. Clues began to emerge suggesting connections between her past experiences and what was happening to her, alongside hints of explanations for the unusual events—ideas like theories about multiple universes in physics, which I’m not sure I buy into but will leave to the experts. I won't reveal any more details. Overall, I believe Russian Doll is creative, featuring a central character who isn’t initially appealing, but whose development was clearly prioritized by the writer(s). I am unsure where they can take the second season; repeating the same structure seems improbable, yet I have faith in their creativity that they will once again stretch boundaries. At minimum, I'll give it a chance and see if I enjoy the next installment.
