With the luncheonette shuttered and the bicycle shop closing its doors, D.J.’s academic success represents the sole brightness in the Conners’ otherwise bleak existence. (Coda: a skirmish involving ice cream erupts in the Conner kitchen; Arnie is taken by extraterrestrials.)
