Synopsis

Returning to North Carolina, Chicken George discovered his sons had taken wives and begun building lives of their own – families rooted in the land. He also learned of a state law that threatened his freedom: it stipulated that any man formerly enslaved could forfeit his status if he remained within the state for longer than sixty days. As if this personal crisis were not enough, the nation itself fractured, consumed by the burgeoning conflict of Civil War.
