I usually find myself having complicated reactions to shows about detectives or crime investigations. That’s not the case with Rocco Schiavone. This is an exceptional series, really impressive in every way. The criminal cases that form the basis of this show are equally important to a well-developed story about the people involved, especially its main character, Italian police inspector Rocco Schiavone. He’s a complicated individual dealing with a painful history and seemingly unable to move forward. A nonconformist who operates within law enforcement but doesn't comfortably conform to standard procedures. Rocco is what makes this series so compelling, as much as the criminal stories it presents in each episode. He’s larger than life, full of imperfections—as most engaging people are—but ultimately a good person despite his faults. It’s something fans of well-made shows with intelligent writing and great performances, plus a detective element, should definitely check out.
