The fascination with alternate realities and the mysteries of existence is undeniable; people consistently seek answers about life’s purpose and our place within it. It’s a fundamental human drive to understand and make sense of things—science can explain so much, yet there always seems to be something beyond explanation that emerges. In _Requiem_, Matilda's journey is presented as a search for her own identity, but ultimately reflects the broader quest we all undertake to find our place in the universe. Matilda Gray (Lydia Wilson) is a cellist whose life takes a dramatic turn following her mother Janice’s (Joanna Scanlan) unexpected suicide. While sorting through her mother's belongings, she discovers newspaper articles detailing the disappearance of a young girl from a small Welsh village twenty-three years prior. Accompanied by her friend Hal Fine (Joel Fry), Matilda travels to Wales to investigate her mother’s interest in the case, and what she uncovers challenges everything she believed. _Requiem_ is unfortunately not a compelling series. The storyline feels heavily borrowed from numerous sources, drawing obvious inspiration from Henry James's _The Turn of the Screw_, Jack Starrett's _Race with the Devil_, and Robert Eggers’s _The VVitch: A New-England Folktale_. Matilda doesn't inspire much sympathy; she comes across as unlikeable and lacking in self-awareness, particularly when interacting with a child and a woman who is clearly struggling. The show’s attempt at horror follows current trends—shallow focus shots, stark shadows, jarring sounds, and predictable jump scares are all employed. Tara Fitzgerald, portraying antiques dealer Sylvia Walsh, seems to have lost her touch as an actress. While the final twenty minutes of the last episode manage to be genuinely unsettling, it's a late development that doesn’t redeem the earlier episodes.
