Synopsis

A decade before America’s entry into World War II, three thousand two hundred Americans journeyed to Europe to combat the rise of fascism. Young men, barely more than boys at eighteen, nineteen, and twenty, volunteered to risk everything for a democratically elected government besieged in the Spanish Civil War. Half a century later, these survivors offer their own compelling account of those years—a vivid narrative of hardship and courage, and the lives they have built in the decades since.
