Financial hardship affects a significant portion of Dutch households – one in five. In an effort to alleviate this and avert debt crises stemming from online payments, municipalities have been reaching out to residents since 2021 regarding unpaid rent, utilities, health insurance, and other essential bills. But are these outreach efforts proving effective? Do the messages resonate? And are young people adequately equipped to understand the implications?
