Synopsis

Though comprising only a small fraction—3%—of Earth’s total water, freshwater is fundamental to the planet’s climate and the processes of erosion. It is essential for all terrestrial wildlife, providing sustenance, a habitat, and a place for reproduction and hunting. Rivers, lakes, and swamps, where freshwater gathers, teem with aquatic life and other species often uniquely adapted to a watery existence.
