The acting is generally quite good, though there are some weak links; the actor from Game of Thrones seems particularly lacking in presence, while Timothy Spall, Benedict Wong, and Bryan Cranston deliver solid performances—and really, everything points toward this being a worthwhile production, given the quality of its foundation and performers. I have a feeling that because it was made as a joint venture between Channel 4 and Amazon, it served as an opportunity for different directors to each direct an episode. The core issue is that none of those episodes are particularly impressive. They’re acceptable, certainly, but not good or great. I won't elaborate much beyond the initial installment because I want to reflect the level of effort put into this series. You see a young actor with connections cast as a future detective—you know he's a detective solely from his wearing a stereotypical noir hat. The adaptation sticks closely to the original story, but that’s not how you would realistically ignite a Molotov cocktail at police – multiple devices and a readily available fuel source would be needed – but who worries about accuracy when there’s an “angsty” detective with a fedora sucking all the energy from every scene? I almost stopped watching entirely. It adheres to the narrative reasonably well, yet it's just so devoid of imagination and spirit; at its best, it resembles a polished commercial for kitchen equipment—rather than something more ambitious like a car advertisement—and carries about as much emotional weight. Following a rough and uninspired beginning, the remaining nine episodes show slight improvement, but that’s still undermined by the rotating directors and reliant on the cast's efforts. If you're looking for something to do on a dull afternoon, you could skip the first episode; it’s adequate enough.
