Florabelle Campbell, the valley’s acknowledged beauty during Uncle Joe’s boyhood, was expected at the Hotel. The news of her impending arrival swiftly rippled through the community, reaching former admirers like Uncle Joe, Sam, and Ralph. Each man harbored a quiet hope that he might somehow reignite old affections with Florabelle. Upon her arrival, however, she seemed to recall neither Joe nor Sam; it required Betty Jo’s gentle prompting to stir those dormant memories. Ultimately, they all share
