Synopsis

Uncle Joe, the volunteer fire chief, had devised a novel nighttime alert system. Should a valley resident launch a skyrocket to signal a blaze, a designated volunteer would respond by firing the town cannon. However, resistance quickly arose; despite the use of blanks, property still suffered damage from the cannon’s recoil.
