In 2017, Dame Tessa Jowell, former Secretary of State for Culture, received a diagnosis of a malignant brain tumour. The prognosis for those diagnosed with her form of brain cancer is grim; three out of four succumb within a year. Brain cancer is an increasingly prevalent disease, yet the United Kingdom lags behind other Western European nations in survival rates.
