In Britain today, one in nine women will experience life within the walls of a psychiatric hospital, as will one in fourteen men. Nearly half of all hospital beds are occupied by individuals with mental illness. But do we provide sufficient care for those suffering from such conditions? Or do we still harbor a tendency to isolate them, to disregard their needs? A special report by James Mossman explores this evolving landscape.
