If you’re considering watching this show because of what you've heard about time travel, it’s best to adjust your expectations. That element is barely a factor, representing only a tiny portion of the story—at least through the first season, which is how far I’ve managed to get. Even that aspect isn't presented with any scientific explanation; there's nothing remotely like science fiction here. It's not similar to _LOST_ at all. Perhaps things will improve beyond the initial episodes, but time travel was my main reason for trying it out, and my wife is finding it far more entertaining than I am. For me, it’s just okay; consider this a caution more than an actual review. The show primarily focuses on Claire Randall (played by Caitriona Balfe), a spirited English nurse from 1945, who finds herself transported to 18th-century Scotland through some sort of mystical magic involving a runestone. A significant portion of the narrative revolves around a romance reminiscent of those found in Harlequin novels between Claire and Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan). There’s fighting, a noticeable amount of bare skin, and gore that might hold the attention of male viewers, but ultimately, I believe this show will mostly resonate with women. (This might reveal something you didn't want to know, but there is an extended sequence involving male-on-male torture that I found particularly unpleasant. Also, beyond the main characters, many of the men portrayed are quite awful.) I do find the historical setting and costumes engaging; I’ve learned a good deal about 18th-century Scotland that I previously didn't know. So, if you enjoy that kind of thing, it might appeal to you. However, I feel that having a modern woman’s perspective somewhat detracts from the authenticity of the historical setting. I preferred _Downton Abbey_, even though it's set in a different era—I think it handled the period drama aspect more effectively, despite its own share of soap opera clichés.
