Darren Aronofsky served as executive producer, and Will Smith’s production company produced _One Strange Rock_, which mainly centers on the experiences of eight astronauts and how their time spent in space gave them a fresh perspective on Earth. This viewpoint then serves as a starting point to explore various aspects of Earth Science; each episode highlights a particular astronaut and focuses on a specific topic, like the planet’s respiratory system, the Theia Impact theory, how the Earth shields us from the sun, the beginnings of life, the Permian-Triassic Extinction event, the possibility of establishing a colony on another world, the reciprocal relationship between life and Earth – where life has both changed the planet and been shaped by it – the progression from simple microbes to complex organisms, the development of the human brain, and the idea of Earth as our home. Throughout the series, numerous astonishing facts are presented. For example, the Amazon rainforest generates twenty times more oxygen than humanity could possibly utilize, but that oxygen doesn’t leave the region because it's consumed by the local wildlife; the magnetic field produced by the planet’s core extends 400,000 miles into space in all directions; every strand of DNA found anywhere contains billions of carbon atoms to hold it together; a human body is composed of 37 trillion cells – more than there are stars in our galaxy; tropical islands can be made up of as much as 70% parrot fish waste; photosynthesis creates 100 terrawatts of energy annually, which is six times what humanity could use; the human brain is considered the most intricate object we know of; and 95% of all creatures that have ever lived are now extinct. A particularly striking piece of information I found was that it’s 250,000 miles to the moon, 700 million miles to Saturn, 9 trillion miles to the edge of our solar system (and with current technology, a journey there would take 17,000 years), and 25,000 light years – or 150,000 trillion miles – to reach the edge of our galaxy. That’s quite a distance! It was very enjoyable overall. My only reservation is that many episodes feel stretched out, with two or three side stories included that aren't really connected to the main subject matter. Still, it’s definitely worth watching; the visuals are impressive, the sound design is excellent, there are knowledgeable experts, and the information presented is astounding. If their aim was to make viewers see Earth differently, they certainly succeeded with me.
