It ranks among a small number of British sitcoms I consider exceptionally well-done. In fact, reflecting on it, I’m thinking about compiling a list on my profile to share these shows. Those who were around when One Foot in the Grave was airing might only recall fans enthusiastically repeating Victor Musgrove’s trademark phrase, “I do not believe it!”—and people certainly did get quite excited about that. However, there's significantly more substance to the program than just that. The show incorporates dark humor and its storylines are often complex, frequently culminating in a surprising and dramatic conclusion. That’s an impressive accomplishment for something running only thirty minutes. You’ll find jokes that elicit genuine laughter, clever visual gags, and observations about society and human behavior. It features a strong ensemble cast, and what I particularly appreciate is how they poke fun at nearly all the characters—with the exception of Victor's wife, portrayed with nuance by Annette Crosbie—but without reducing them to flat stereotypes. These characters possess some depth and moments that evoke empathy. I’ve bought this series on DVD so I can watch it whenever I want; it’s one of a select few shows I’ve done that for. Learning about the production process afterward, I've gained an even greater appreciation for the effort writer Davis Renwick invested in each episode. Don’t overlook it.
