It really felt as though this could have been Fables, or at least taken inspiration from that Bill Willingham comic series to a greater extent. It seemed like it was aiming for something similar, but didn’t quite get there. I suspect Disney's involvement and Warner Brothers’ ownership of DC properties created legal limitations, forcing them to diverge significantly. The show initially appeared headed in a Fables direction, but then certain plot developments were abandoned during the first season—likely because they risked getting too close to the source material legally. After that, the narrative drifted somewhat before finding its stride around the middle point, only to then unravel as it stretched on for too long.
