It would have made a perfect conclusion for the series if this had been the last episode. It really wasn’t! Apparently, it was originally planned as such, until the show got picked up again, but most of the actors were already bound by their contracts. Now, a concluding scene sets the stage for a fresh start, mirroring the beginning with an adult Henry being contacted by a daughter he doesn't know—roughly the same age Henry was when he discovered Emma in the first season’s opening episode. She tells him that he has to come with her because "his family needs him." It seems like Henry is just as unaware as Emma was in that earlier episode, so another memory spell must have been cast, or something of that sort. For those who aren't aware, the upcoming season won’t feature Emma Swan, Snow White, Prince Charming, Belle, young Henry, and I’m sure there’s someone else I’ve forgotten. The focus will shift to adult Henry, Hook, Gold, and the Evil Queen—who isn’t evil anymore. It'll be interesting to see how they plan to continue or explain where everyone has gone (since there was a several-year time jump in that concluding scene), but honestly, I don't have much faith in the show’s future success. It always centered on Emma, Snow, Charming, and everything revolving around them. Without those characters, it feels like a reboot attempting to recapture its former identity but falling short. They all appear together, happy, enjoying a Thanksgiving-style meal at the episode's natural conclusion. Then, somehow, everything is disrupted. Is the ultimate takeaway that there are no truly happy endings or beginnings because even in a fantasy world, life can be difficult? Do bad things happen to good people regardless of how much they’ve struggled to reach a stable point? It should have concluded here; it would have been a suitable ending.
