Synopsis

For centuries, the ancestors of today’s Maya civilization flourished in elaborate urban centers throughout Central America. Around 750 CE, however, a significant shift occurred: many of these major cities were abandoned. Archaeologists are now examining compelling new evidence suggesting that catastrophic droughts and ensuing instability ultimately overwhelmed these once-thriving settlements.
