I was immediately hooked on “New Amsterdam,” even though it had already been airing for five years. The romantic storylines were pleasant enough to watch, but what really grabbed me was the show’s honest depiction of hospital routines, the difficult aspects of healthcare work, and the wide variety of patient experiences. Because I'm interested in social sciences, I often think about how people behave and relate to one another when faced with different circumstances; "New Amsterdam" gives a great opportunity to examine this, presenting a look at how society functions without the stresses of real life. The show also turned out to be an interesting example of leadership in action. Max, who is in charge of the hospital, demonstrates a calm, sincere, and successful approach to leading that I find particularly appealing. Seeing him deal with the problems of managing such a large institution offers helpful lessons for people interested in leadership—something that includes me, as someone who helps others develop their own leadership skills. The fact that it’s set in New York City contributes another interesting element. The city itself, full of different cultures and types of people, creates an energetic atmosphere for the series. We meet a lot of characters from all walks of life, each with their own stories and problems, which reflects the complicated nature of modern society. I enjoy being able to observe these interactions without getting personally involved—a benefit that “New Amsterdam” offers. While the first couple of seasons established a very high standard for originality and consistency, I did notice things seemed a little less sharp in later ones. It’s possible the writers simply used up their ideas, or it could just be my own impression. Either way, those early seasons still provide an engaging and thoughtful look at human relationships, medical work, and leadership, so “New Amsterdam” is definitely worth watching for people with similar interests to mine.
