It’s striking how many revival shows have emerged recently, claiming to recapture the feel and essence of past eras, specifically the early 1990s in America. However, “NCIS: Origins” fails to deliver on its promise. It feels like a costume party where everyone dresses as their favorite detective from the nineties but acts with modern sensibilities. The outcome is a program that mostly works, but only at face value. The performances are acceptable and the narratives generally plausible, yet the contemporary, diversity-conscious viewpoints feel out of place for the time period—and honestly, they don’t quite mesh even in today's world. If you’re hoping for a nostalgic experience, you will likely be let down. It seems probable that the writing was handled by individuals who weren’t around during 1991. Nevertheless, if you simply want an uncomplicated mainstream detective show and can tolerate the now-familiar sprinkling of progressive elements, it might suffice. It's an average series. Update: Unfortunately, season two introduces even more of a gradual infusion of progressive themes. The rating has been adjusted downward because of this.
