The show proved decent, though not exceptional! Given its high ratings, anticipation was certainly warranted, but it didn’t take long to realize what I was in for. As a portrayal of life experiences, it failed to capture the feeling of real relationships between people and ultimately settled into being unremarkable, attempting to manufacture that sense artificially through predictable situations devoid of subtlety, development, meaningful characters, or consistent themes. Outside of the two central figures, the supporting actors were uninteresting, seemingly receiving minimal attention which contributed to moments where the show felt dull. Regarding production quality, the music was terrible when viewed on Netflix; it appeared they simply inserted generic, pre-made tracks for ease of worldwide distribution. The television broadcast version did feature actual songs and musical pieces, which are vital for a drama with this kind of subject matter. Typical of Netflix, really. Another observation is that the series includes brief, unconnected storylines for minor characters that disappear after only a couple of scenes or fail to enhance the main plot, seemingly in an effort to make the show seem more substantial. The one positive aspect is seeing older performers given prominent roles, something not often seen, but otherwise it’s just a collection of familiar life drama tropes with occasional pleasant moments.
