"Nautilus" reimagines Jules Verne’s science fiction concept, resulting in an updated version of his undersea adventure story that isn’t completely unenjoyable. The familiar Captain Nemo has been altered into a perceptive but subdued individual held against his will by what seems to be a 19th-century corporation reminiscent of the East India Company; they possess their own military force and enslaved laborers. Themes of social justice, the mistreatment of various groups, are present throughout. It’s not pushed aggressively, but it does prompt consideration as to why this approach was deemed essential. The narrative incorporates contrived situations intended to highlight the female characters. For instance, despite his expertise and involvement in constructing the Nautilus, when an engineering issue arises, Nemo suddenly seems incapable, needing a woman of high social standing to resolve it. The intention is obvious, and the outcome feels like a complete joke. If you’re willing to disregard these elements, the story itself proves quite engaging. I also found the acting to be strong, featuring performers from various countries including the UK, Australia, and New Zealand; this contributes variety and interest to the narrative. The sets and CGI are satisfactory, though not outstanding. They succeed in recreating that Victorian atmosphere with stylish details, which extends to the design of the submersible Nautilus itself. Ultimately, "Nautilus" is a flawed production, as frequently happens these days. The emphasis on diversity and inclusion detracts from the story’s overall quality; fortunately, they manage to avoid the worst excesses of this approach enough to keep the series watchable and provide some entertainment.
