Botswana’s elephant population is thriving, perhaps even excessively so. Concerns are rising that an overabundance of elephants may harm the delicate desert environment, prompting suggestions for a cull potentially involving up to 60,000 animals. Researcher Mike Chase investigates historic elephant migration paths – he has followed them across immense deserts, barren salt flats, and even Angolan minefields. Now, he believes he’s developed a strategy that could secure their long-term survival.
