Takashi Natsume has always been an outsider, marked by a peculiar ability: he can see the hidden world of spirits called youkai. Having learned early on that no one would understand, he’d retreated into himself, resigned to a solitary existence. Everything changes when Takashi unwittingly shatters a mystical seal, unleashing Madara—a powerful spirit who appears as a charming, fortunate-looking cat. Madara quickly realizes Takashi bears an uncanny resemblance to Reiko Natsume, his grandmother and a legendary figure in the youkai world known for compiling the coveted Book of Friends. Now, that book is in Takashi’s care. Though uninterested in wielding its power, Takashi chooses to safeguard the book as a connection to his grandmother and to keep it out of the grasping hands of scheming spirits. He strikes a bargain with Madara: once his time comes, he'll relinquish the book, but until then, Madara will serve as his watchful protector. Driven by this agreement and a desire to release the youkai sealed within the Book of Friends, Takashi begins a journey that slowly bridges the gap between his world and theirs—and perhaps, even opens him up to human connection once more.
