Synopsis

A body lay upon the stairs ascending toward Rocamadour’s sanctuary esplanade. It appeared he had been compelled, before his death, to undertake a penance echoing medieval custom – crawling on his knees up the 216 steps. But what transgression could possibly merit so grim a punishment?
