I’m having trouble deciding what I think about "Morpheus." The performances are excellent, and the atmosphere of a dark, unsettling European crime story feels authentic, but something isn't working. My ability to judge believability stops there. Beyond that initial setup, the foundation of the narrative crumbles when you consider what the rest of the plot depends on. To briefly shift gears, a series like "Gomorrah" succeeded because it was clear from the beginning who the characters were. They were Italian gangsters; it made complete sense that they would commit awful acts to climb through the criminal hierarchy in Europe. What doesn’t make sense is a Polish lawyer, close to achieving his ambitions, with young children he must protect and a supportive wife, jeopardizing everything to retrieve the body of his disreputable brother who was killed during a party on a boat. It's even harder to accept that he then discards nearly all of what he’s worked for to assume his brother’s position. The idea that seasoned criminals would acknowledge him as their leader is also quite far-fetched. To put it simply, I question the writers' reasoning. I can’t suspend my disbelief, and because of this, the entire series loses its way for me. Ultimately, I was disappointed by an improbable backstory that doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. It’s unfortunate, as there are many other aspects to appreciate.
