Synopsis

Throughout the history of railroads, calamity has been inextricably linked to advancement, as expansion and profit consistently drove management's priorities. In 1875, an average of twenty-two train accidents occurred each day; by 1890, more than six thousand lives had been lost. We will explore how safety, initially a lesser concern, gradually rose to become a central objective.
