Deep beneath the earth's surface, men labor to extract rough diamonds—a substance of pure carbon. Radiant once cut and polished, they are sold as the world’s most prized gem. From the first mines established in the 4th century BC to the advanced technology employed in South Africa today, we will examine both the history and the methods of diamond mining.
