Where might one launch a missile without disturbing those nearby? Or hoist millions of pounds to recover just a few ounces of gold? Naturally, on a proving ground—a place where performance reigns supreme. For when conflict flares or rivals clash, there is no room for explanation. We’ll journey to the US military's Cold Regions Testing Center in Alaska and the desert proving grounds of Arizona, the Olympic Complex in Colorado, and the now-abandoned Packard proving grounds in Michigan.
