Synopsis

Initially, there were balloons and blimps. Then, with foresight and ingenuity, pioneers expanded, strengthened, and equipped them with engines, giving rise to the airship. These remain among the most captivating of all aerial inventions, also holding the distinction of being the largest aircraft ever flown. Ultimately, 161 rigid airships were constructed before devastating accidents—most notably the EM Hindenburg /EM —brought an end to their reign.
