How does technology hope to capture nature's most ferocious, chaotic storms? For fifty years, American meteorologists have been constructing a nationwide network—employing Doppler Radar, numerous automated data stations, geostationary satellites, and powerful computers—to monitor and analyze tornadoes. Despite this substantial scientific undertaking, forecasters can only tentatively begin to grasp the reasons behind tornado formation and how to anticipate them. We will examine advanced systems s
