Synopsis

This tells the story of an astonishing achievement in engineering: the construction of a 51-mile canal, a project that demanded ten years of labor and involved more than 40,000 workers. Tragically, over 6,000 succumbed to yellow fever, malaria, and other devastating illnesses. A previous effort by the French, lasting nine years, had ultimately failed, claiming the lives of some 20,000 people.
