Synopsis
On June 24, 1982, British Airways Flight 9 encountered St. Elmo's fire during its journey from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Perth, Australia. Moments later, all four engines failed. The crew managed to restart the engines after a controlled descent and safely landed the aircraft. The unusual electrical phenomena and subsequent engine failure were the result of volcanic ash ejected from Mount Galunggung in Indonesia following a significant eruption.
