Synopsis

The first semi-final of the University of Surrey competition featured three participants: Arthur Green, a civil servant whose chosen text was *The Novels of Anthony Powell*; Geoffrey Reynolds, an image intensifier tester who selected *The Byzantine Empire in the Age of Justinian I*; and Angela Alves, a housewife, who opted for *W.
